Home Renovation 102: Putting your Plan into Action

  • WeWork 810 7th Street Northeast Washington, DC, 20002 United States (map)

Are you looking for a home and feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of a rehab?

Do you own, and want to educate yourself before engaging contractors on a renovation project?

Created in response to a rising demographic of single women homeowners, this workshop is for all individuals who want to gain a better understanding of home improvement and construction management, with a focus on making residential renovation and rehab more approachable for women. Participants will learn about the building process from start to finish, while developing a plan for navigating wants versus needs.

Course content is split over two evenings: Tuesday, June 4th & Tuesday, June 18th from 6:00 - 8:00pm.

Participants may join for an individual session, but we strongly recommend attendance for both Part 1 and Part 2. In each session we will cover:

PART 1: Planning and Preparing to Renovate (June 4)

  • Plan and appropriately for your renovation

  • Identify the return on investment of your home improvement choices

  • Set realistic renovation and rehab expectations

  • Recognize the importance of research and a clearly articulated design vision

PART 2: Putting your Plan into Action (June 18)

  • Pros and cons of DIY versus hiring a professional

  • Find and select contractors and tradespeople

  • Understand legal considerations: contracts, permits, licenses and insurance

  • Procure supplies and materials

  • Project management, contingency planning and budgeting
